Since their inception in 1831, the Sisters of Mercy have taken their mission straight to the people—breaking away from convention and ‘filling the gaps’ in the community where it was needed most.

To this day, 102 years after the foundation of their first Brisbane hospital, their spirit of mercy lives on through the Mater people. Together we have perpetuated the Mercy mission and lived the values, whilst continuing to provide exceptional care.

2007 was another exceptional year for Mater Health Services—we pursued innovation and excellence in our field, and delivered health care to address unmet needs across the community. We reflected on and celebrated our countless achievements and planned for another year of innovations and milestones.

Some of the highlights include the building of the new Mater Mothers’ Hospitals; progression towards the goal of creating a single children’s health service, the Queensland Children’s Hospital; and our partnership with the Brisbane Homelessness Service Centre. 2007 was also the year Mater strived to become ‘greener’ and more environmentally sustainable.

We have experienced some incredible achievements in the past year, things that I believe have been made possible through our faith in God and the charism of the Sisters of Mercy.
