New swimming pool at Murgon

In an effort to support the health of the children in the Murgon and Cherbourg communities, Mater Health Services donated $10,000 to the Murgon Shire Council to keep their popular swimming pool open and operable over the summer of 2007/2008.

The provision of a swimming pool to indigenous communities has beneficial health and social outcomes—medical research reports that children who swim in maintained pools have reduced ear and skin infections compared to children who swim in stagnant waterholes. Ultimately, the improved health of children in this shire has the potential to assist with better social and educational outcomes.

Murgon Shire Council Chief Executive Officer Peter Hackshaw said the communities of Murgon and Cherbourg were extremely grateful to Mater for our valuable assistance in maintaining the health and welfare of the youth in their area, which is at the northern end of Queensland’s South Burnett region.
