Brisbane Homelessness Service Centre

As part of its strategic plan and Mission delivery, Mater Health Services responds to changing community health care needs through a commitment to live and perpetuate the tradition established by the Sisters of Mercy.

In July 2007, an addendum to the memorandum of understanding for the Brisbane Homelessness Service Centre was signed by Mater to provide and meet the costs associated with the provision of a full-time Community Nurse.

With the core function of addressing the primary health care needs of the homeless who use the service, Mater nurse Ros Butler commenced duties on 22 October 2007.

The primary purpose of Ms Butler’s role is to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team, support the volunteer General Practitioners (GP), conduct sexual health clinics, provide immunisations to children, liaise with Mater agencies, attend to primary health issues and education such as diabetes management and vein care, and visit clients sleeping rough in public spaces.

Mater Pathology, Pharmacy, Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Liaison Service, and Social Work will also assist in the delivery of services, while Mater Pathology and Pharmacy will absorb the costs associated with co-payment resulting from pathology tests and pharmaceuticals.
