Redevelopment project

During 2007, Mater Adult Hospital (MAH) underwent a major refurbishment to support public services in a wide range of specialities with a particular emphasis on gynaecology and gynae-oncology services, medical oncology, chemotherapy and an increase in services for a range of medical and surgical conditions.

Undertaken in stages to enable the hospital to remain functional, the refurbishment has incorporated state-of-the-art equipment including high-level isolation rooms, ceiling mounted electronic patient hoist systems for Intensive Care Unit (ICU), service pendant systems for both ICU and operating theatres, an integrated digital operating theatre with high definition capability and a lightweight helideck.

In addition, ICU and Coronary Care Unit (CCU) have been refitted and expanded, and have a new location on level seven of MAH. These two departments now provide 11 Intensive Care beds and 6 Coronary Care beds.

Level five of MAH has an expanded Procedural Suite providing a comfortable waiting area, Day Procedure Unit, 23-hour Ward, Endoscopy Unit, and Operating Theatre Suite consisting of two new endoscopy rooms, two new procedure rooms, three new obstetric operating rooms, a fully integrated digital operating room and four additional operating rooms providing a total of 20 procedure/operating rooms.

The extension of the current building towards Stanley Street has provided additional medical record storage, along with a new outpatient service and the future facilities for the Queensland Paediatric Cardiology outpatient services.

The Medical Assessment and Planning Unit (MAPU) and Emergency Department Short Stay beds and support facilities have been increased to 14 bed spaces. Adjacent to this area is a new Specimen Collection and Preadmission Clinic.

Staff cafeteria facilities have also been renovated, along with a complete refit of kitchen facilities giving hospital staff the choice of dining inside with a TV lounge area or café style seating, and balcony dining with a modern barbeque for special occasions.

Inpatient wards have also been refurbished, including a complete refit of all ensuites and key clinical systems such as suction and the nurse call system.

The completion of the new pedestrian link bridge across Stanley Street has also improved access and linkages between Mater Private Hospital Brisbane (MPHB), MAH and the major on-site car parks.
