Opening of ICU/CCU
On Friday 16 February 2007, the new state-of-the-art Critical Care Unit located on level seven in the Mater Adult Hospital (MAH) was officially opened by the Queensland Health Minister, The Honourable Mr Stephen Robertson MP, and blessed by the Bishop, Most Rev Brian Finnigan DD.
The Critical Care Unit comprises the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Coronary Care Unit (CCU) and Coronary Investigations Unit and is equipped with the latest health care technology. The new unit has eleven intensive-care high-dependency beds and six coronary care beds. It will provide public medical and surgical specialty services.
In the ICU, two pendant arms at each bed space provide the services including gases, power and data. The unit is fitted out with two negative pressure capable isolation rooms with ensuites, and one positive pressure isolation room.
Ceiling mounted patient lifting hoists have also been installed over each ICU bed space, with the capacity to lift over 200 kg. One hoist will be able to lift over 400 kg. The CCU beds are designed as six single bedrooms, four with private ensuites and two with a shared ensuite.
In addition, the new look Mater Adult Specialist Clinics located on levels two and three, and Medical Records on level one are operational in the newly established Stanley Street extension.
The opening of these units signifies an important milestone in Mater’s redevelopment project, as they were the first new areas to open after the government announced the refurbishment of MAH and the building of the new Mater Mothers’ Hospitals in 2004.
