Mater Adult Hospital
The Sisters of Mercy opened Mater Adult Hospital (MAH) in 1911 to address the health care needs of Brisbane’s growing community to the south of the Brisbane River. Since then it has become an important part of Queensland’s hospital system and provides a significant service to people across the state. The original hospital was replaced in 1982 by a new building, which now stands as a 226-bed facility. In 2007, the MAH underwent a number of changes:
- refurbishment (Redevelopment project)
- Australia’s first high definition (HD) theatres
- new Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Coronary Care Unit (CCU).
MAH features a 24-hour Emergency Department, Intensive and Coronary Care Units, Day Surgery, Day Oncology, Day Hospice Respite and busy Medical, Cancer and Surgical Units.
The hospital’s Division of Medicine offers specialist services in respiratory medicine, endocrinology, gastroenterology, nephrology, neurology, cardiology, infectious diseases, dermatology, rheumatology, general surgery and medicine.
As a lead hospital in the National Demonstration Hospitals Program, MAH has a reputation for initiating innovative programs to improve patient care management.
